About Fred Stuart

Born in 1947, Fred Stuart is widely recognized as one of the true masters of vintage-style electric guitar building. His journey began in guitar repair in the early 1970s, eventually leading him to Fender Musical Instruments. In 1987, Stuart became a founding member of the Fender Custom Shop, working alongside pioneers like John Page and Michael Stevens. Rising to the rank of Senior Master Builder, he earned the nickname “Mr. Telecaster” for his unmatched expertise in recreating and evolving Fender’s most iconic model.

During his tenure at Fender, Stuart was the primary builder behind historically significant replicas and models, including the Snake Head Telecaster, Nocaster, Esquire, and the 40th Anniversary Telecaster. He also spearheaded the development of the Danny Gatton and Clarence White signature models, as well as standout projects like the Pine Esquire and the Production B-Bender.

Since retiring from the Fender Custom Shop in 2001, Stuart has focused on his own label, Stuart Fine Custom Instruments. Dedicated to infusing a vintage soul into every guitar and pickup, he continues to use techniques faithful to the original methods of the "Golden Era." His instruments are revered not just for their technical mastery but for their authentic tone—a quality that has earned them a place in the hands of legends such as Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, David Gilmour, Keith Richards, and Eddie Van Halen.

Today, Fred Stuart continues to build with a philosophy rooted in authenticity and tone, handcrafting each instrument to preserve the legacy passed down directly from the era of Leo Fender himself.
